How accurate is an MRI at diagnosing injured knee ligaments?
نویسندگان
چکیده
MRI offers high sensitivity for detecting ACL, PCL tears Several prospective studies have compared MRI with arthroscopy for diagnosing ACL and PCL tears (TABLE). All enrolled patients had sustained knee trauma and had had a clinical exam that suggested ligamentous injury. MRI and arthroscopy were performed regardless of MRI findings. The surgeons performing arthroscopy were blinded to the MRI results. Although MRI equipment and techniques varied in all the studies, the sensitivity and specificity remained consistently high for detecting ACL injuries. Thin-slice views, special oblique views, and a fast spin-echo technique didn’t improve either the sensitivity or specificity compared with conventional techniques or views, nor did decreasing the time interval from injury to imaging. Prospective studies of PCL injuries also revealed high sensitivity and specificity with MRI.

Background: The knee is the most commonly injured joint. The internal components of the knee include the meniscuses, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligaments (PCL). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now used widely because of its high accuracy and noninvasiveness. Our objective was to diagnose internal knee component injuries by MRI and compare its diagnostic valu...
متن کاملMRI efficacy in diagnosing internal lesions of the knee: a retrospective analysis
BACKGROUND Many surgeons tend to believe that MRI is an accurate, non invasive diagnostic method, enough to lead to decisions for conservative treatment and save a patient from unnecessary arthroscopy. We conducted a retrospective study to investigate the accuracy of the MRI of the knee for the detection of injuries of the meniscus, cruciate ligaments and articular cartilage, in comparison with...
متن کاملMR imaging of the knee: current concepts
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revolutionized the evaluation of musculoskeletal soft tissue disorders. This is most evident in the evaluation of internal derangements of the knee. MRI is an accurate and cost-effective means of evaluating a wide spectrum of knee injuries, ranging from cruciate-collateral ligament injuries to cartilage deficiencies. For clinicians and radiologists, evaluati...
متن کاملUltrasound assessment of internal derangement of the knee.
In a prospective double-blind study we investigated internal knee disorders with ultrasound and compared the results with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and arthroscopy. The aim was to determine the effectiveness of ultrasound in diagnosing Internal Derangement of the Knee (IDK) and to compare the results with MRI. Over an 18-months period, 81 patients were examined. All were male; they had a...
متن کاملIs Ultrasound Effective in Diagnosing Internal Derangements of the Knee?
Internal derangement of knee significantly affects daily activities of patients and management of such cases with accurate diagnosis and early treatment is of utmost importance. This study determines the benefits of arthroscopy directly and also compares the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound, MRI and arthroscopic findings in diagnosing internal derangements of the knee. This is a prospe...
